Copy-paste, by Mecanoo

This is by exception not about iconography, although it loosely related to the subject.

The Dutch architect Francine Houben/Mecanoo designed the Theatre and Conference Center La Llotja for the Spanish city Lleida/Lerida. The design looks similar to the Auditorium of the TU Delft by Van de Broek & Bakema of 1966. Francine Houben is professor at the TU Delft and Mecanoo has built a library next to the Auditorium and has redesigned its interior.
And like that isn’t enough, Mecanoo is currently designing a (hideous) new park in front of the building. In 2010 the Brutalist building by Van den Broek & Bakema which is called ‘the frog’ by Francine Houben sits in a park with nicely curved hills and meandering paths. Bigness deflated by a ‘human-scale’ surroundings.

In Spain people are surprised by the similarity. Here in Delft, we are not. Mecanoo has always made a Retro-Pop-Modernism.
