Champagne Glasses, by Alsop
Rotterdam Central Station (Copyright William Alsop)
This would have been the entrance of Rotterdam Central Station if William Alsop had it his way. The design was eventually cancelled because the Municipality of Rotterdam thought it was too expensive.
The featuring ‘champagne glasses’ are programmed with cultural spaces and offices. They were later added to the design to improve the iconicity/imageability of the design. Ironicly they became the symbol of the ‘excessive’ design. An iconography with an impopular touch - such as ‘waste’ in the case of a publicly paid project - never works. The problem here was however that the Municipality had asked for an ambitious project, but later on chose a new architect for a less ambitious plan.
